Reflecting on my first week, in a new nursery setting
My First Week.
Starting a new role after 18 years in one setting was always going to be a big change, but I don’t think anything fully prepares you for just how much of a shift it can be.
This week has been challenging in ways I didn’t quite expect emotionally, mentally, and physically. Stepping into a completely new environment, learning new systems, meeting new people, and trying to find your place within an already established team is a lot to take in all at once.
I have spent the week supporting across different rooms, observing practice, getting to know the children, and beginning to understand how the setting operates day to day. While this has been valuable, it has also highlighted just how important familiarity, routine, and strong team connections are things that naturally take time to build.
Coming from a setting where I felt confident, established, and secure, it has been an adjustment to step back into a space where I am learning again. It has reminded me that growth often comes with discomfort, and that being outside of your comfort zone is part of developing both professionally and personally.
Alongside this, I have been completing induction training, revisiting key areas such as safeguarding, health and safety, and professional responsibilities. While these are areas I feel confident in, it has been important to understand how they are applied within a new setting and to begin aligning my practice.
This week hasn’t been about having all the answers it has been about taking things in, reflecting, and allowing myself the time to adjust. I am learning to balance my instinct to lead with the need to first understand, which is something I know will make me stronger in the long run.
As I move into next week, I am looking forward to becoming more settled, building stronger relationships with the team, and beginning to feel more confident in my role within the setting.
Reflection: This week has reminded me that change is not always easy, even when it is the right step. Growth can feel uncomfortable, but it also brings opportunity. I am giving myself the time and space to adapt, learn, and find my place within this new chapter.
